Chapter 78: Deaf Old Lady Selling Food Coupons
The next few days were relatively uneventful. Ever since Li Shengli had a quarrel with Jia Zhang and a meeting of the entire hospital was held, people in the hospital also discovered that Li Shengli was not as honest as he looked and he really had a bad temper.
It was almost the end of the month, and the old lady in the backyard asked Yi Zhonghai to find Sha Zhu.
"Zhu Zi, tomorrow, Sunday, carry the old lady in the backyard on your back and go out to do some errands." Yi Zhonghai found Sha Zhu who was resting at home.
"What's the matter?" Sha Zhu was a little puzzled. This old lady didn't have to worry about food and drink, and there was even someone to empty her urinal for her. What could she have to do?
"The old lady didn't say anything, you'll know if you go and take a look." Yi Zhonghai made some guesses.
"Okay, I'll go take a look tomorrow." Sha Zhu responded. In this courtyard, Sha Zhu would help with anything except his foul mouth, except for Xu Damao's matter of course.
On Sunday, Sha Zhu was sleeping in when a man came running in from outside the door.
"Silly Uncle, Silly Uncle, wake up quickly." Bang Geng shook Sha Zhu who was lying on the bed hard.
"Who is it?" Sha Zhu was woken up by the shaking of the quilt and looked towards the bed with sleepy eyes.
"Uncle Silly, why are you still sleeping?" Banggeng looked around the house, trying to find somewhere to eat.
"The fire has gone out in the middle of the night. I'm freezing. It's so warm in bed." Sha Zhu said lazily, "Bang Geng, what can I do for you?"
"Uncle Sha, I didn't have enough food this morning, so I came to see if there was anything to eat." Bang Geng looked around but didn't see anything to eat. "My grandma said you have plenty of food here."
"Hey, your grandma is right about this." Sha Zhu wrapped in a quilt took out a bag from under the bed.
"Do you know what's in here?" Sha Zhu boasted with some pride, "It's filled with peanuts."
Bang Geng's eyes lit up. This is a good thing. He couldn't eat enough of it during the Chinese New Year.
"Do you want to eat?" Sha Zhu raised his eyebrows and asked complacently.
Banggeng was a little sensitive. Seeing Shazhu's look, he thought Shazhu was mocking him.
"Since you call me Uncle Sha, go and light the fire for me. I will cook for you after the fire is lit." Sha Zhu motioned Bang Geng to light the fire for him.
When Banggeng heard that Shazhu wanted to give him peanuts, he no longer cared about Shazhu's teasing.
"Uncle Silly, where is your coal? I'll go and light a fire for you now." Banggeng stood up and picked up the tongs from the stove, and asked while opening and closing the tongs with his right hand.
"It's on the shelf outside the door." Sha Zhu didn't move. The house was too cold.
Banggeng happily picked up two pieces of honeycomb coal from outside the door, put them in the stove and lit the fire. Banggeng often lit fire at home, so he was very familiar with it.
Bang Geng started a fire and waited for it to slowly grow bigger. When the fire was a little bigger, he stared expectantly at the bag of peanuts in Sha Zhu's hand.
When Shazhu saw Banggeng's eager eyes, he stopped teasing him, stood up, took the clothes beside him and put them on without washing his face or brushing his teeth. He took a handful of peanuts from his pocket, wiped the ashes on the stove, put a piece of paper on it, and placed it directly on the stove without putting the pot on.
While this was going on, Sha Zhu took out two steamed buns from the cupboard, cut them into slices with a knife, and put them on the stove.
"Banggeng, you watch the fire and make sure to turn the food over. I'm going to go wash up." Shazhu put the things away and signaled Banggeng to pay attention to the fire so that they wouldn't burn.
Bang Geng nodded in response, without taking his eyes off the stove.
Sha Zhu didn't take it seriously. He just glanced at it and went to wash up.
After Shazhu finished washing up, the food on the stove was ready. "Okay, eat." Shazhu handed some peanuts and steamed buns to Banggeng, who took them and ate them voraciously. At home, he only drank some cornmeal porridge, which was not enough to fill him up.
Shazhu looked at Banggeng with satisfaction. Banggeng's eating habits reminded him of his childhood.
"Uncle Silly, can I bring something for Xiaodang?" Banggeng wolfed down the food, raised his right hand and wiped the corner of his mouth with his right sleeve.
When Sha Zhu saw Bang Geng's action, he twitched his mouth silently. This was just like when he was a child. Bang Geng's words reminded Sha Zhu of himself, when he also had good things to give to his sister when he was a child.
"Of course." Sha Zhu roasted some more peanuts and steamed bread slices, and when they were done, he wrapped them in paper and let Bang Geng take them home.
Sha Zhu simply finished his breakfast, remembered what Uncle Yi Zhonghai told him yesterday, tidied up a little, and went to the backyard.
"Old lady, do you have something to talk to me about?" Sha Zhu came to the deaf old lady's house in the backyard, knocked on the door, and after waiting for a definite answer from inside, he walked in and asked.
"Oh, my silly Zhuzi, you are finally here." The deaf old lady had been sitting by the bed waiting for him for a long time. As she was old, she slept less and got up early.
"Old lady, what do you want today? This hundred-pound thing is left to you today." Sha Zhu joked with the deaf old lady.
"Okay, okay." The deaf old lady smiled with relief, "Grandson, come on, carry me out."
"Okay." Sha Zhu was not vague. He had already agreed. He walked to Old Lady Long and half-knelt down. "Come up, old lady."
The deaf old lady smiled, stood up with all her strength, and then lay on Sha Zhu's back.
"Let's go, Shazhu." The deaf old lady put one hand on Shazhu's shoulder and held him tightly, and pointed in the direction with the other hand holding the crutch.
"Okay, let's go." Sha Zhu put his hands on the deaf old lady's legs, gently lifted them up, stood up, shouted, and walked out.
"I say, old lady, we are already out of the courtyard, you have to tell me what we are going to do." Sha Zhu carried the deaf old lady out of the courtyard. Walking on the road, Sha Zhu was a little confused. He could only walk in the direction the deaf old lady pointed. After walking for a while, Sha Zhu couldn't help but ask curiously.
"Don't worry about it. Just go straight and it's at that intersection." The deaf old lady didn't intend to tell him why she came out. Sha Zhu would know it later.
"Oh, old lady, you're finally here." A middle-aged woman was standing at the entrance of the alley. When she saw the deaf old lady, she immediately said with a hint of complaint in her tone.
"Here I am. I'm giving you the tickets." The deaf old lady tremblingly took out a stack of food coupons from her pocket.
"No, old lady, you asked me to carry you out just for this?" Sha Zhu looked at the transaction in front of him with an incredible look on his face. He thought the old lady was going somewhere, but unexpectedly she came out to sell food coupons.
"Silly Zhu, please speak a little more quietly." The deaf old lady tapped Sha Zhu gently with her cane, signaling him not to speak.
After being hit, Sha Zhu fell silent. Now that he was involved, he could only talk about it after the transaction with Old Lady Long was completed.
"25 cents per pound, there are 52 pounds in total, so I'll give you 13 yuan in total, please count it." The middle-aged woman picked up the ticket, counted it, then took out 13 yuan from her pocket and handed it to the deaf old lady.
"The number matches." The deaf old lady took the money, counted it with her hand, nodded and said.
"Okay, old lady, come to me next time you need it." The middle-aged woman put away the ticket, looked around vigilantly, and quickly left the intersection.
"Hey, old lady, you are really awesome!" Sha Zhu said with emotion.
