Chapter 18 Northwestern University
Zheng Wenjie was wearing white silk pajamas, had messy hair, and was holding a rustling wallet in one hand. He looked left and right in the street, looking for a clothing store while being looked at as if he were a fool.
In the morning, he pushed Duan Jingya awake who was entangled with him, and rummaged through the closet for a long time before finding a pair of pajamas that were almost the same style for men and women. Without the cover of the police hat, Zheng Wenjie was too lazy to take care of her messy hair.
While dealing with Duan Jingya's questions, he rummaged through the drawers and filled a small bag of dollars at Duan Jingya's suggestion. He ignored Duan Jingya who was slumped on the bed and had no strength to get up, washed his face with cold water, and left the small building as Duan Jingya's red and swollen eyes watched him.
Zheng Wenjie felt at ease taking the money, as it was a life-saving favor. He not only helped Duan Jingya solve the problem but also neutralized the poison that Duan Jingya had been poisoned with. As a result, Duan Jingya asked him all sorts of questions without even a word of thanks!
Zheng Wenjie has decided not to associate with this impolite woman.
After turning a street, Zheng Wenjie saw a tailor shop not far away. Through the glass window, he could see all kinds of silk, cotton and linen displayed inside. He turned around and walked into the barber shop next to it.
There were no customers in the barber shop in the early morning. The owner was a kind middle-aged man. When Zheng Wenjie entered the shop, he greeted him warmly: "Sir, do you want a haircut?"
After getting Zheng Wenjie's affirmation, the store manager pulled a white towel and invited Zheng Wenjie to take a seat. The wooden furniture and retro decorations in the store seemed quite elegant to Zheng Wenjie.
Zheng Wenjie informed the store manager of the requirements. After the store manager demonstrated his skills, Zheng Wenjie looked at his slicked-back hair in the square mirror and nodded with satisfaction. The hair on both sides was trimmed almost parallel to the scalp, and his thick black hair fell back from his forehead.
Zheng Wenjie looked at the shop owner and said, "Boss, do you have any hair oil?"
The shop owner smiled and said, "Sir, what kind of hair oil do you want to use? I have Shuangmei Hair Oil, Sanhua Hair Oil, Stankang Hair Oil, and Highland Hair Toner in my shop."
"What is the favorite drink among the guests who come here?" Zheng Wenjie asked curiously after hearing the brand that no one in later generations had ever heard of.
"That must be Stancomb."
Zheng Wenjie nodded decisively: "Then I will use Stancon too. If I don't put some hair oil on this slicked-back hair, it would be a shame to your craftsmanship!"
The store manager personally applied hair oil to Zheng Wenjie and asked curiously, "Sir, it's so cold, why are you out in your pajamas? Look who on the street is not wearing a cotton-padded jacket."
"I'm in great shape. Yesterday I met an impolite person. I helped her, but she didn't even say sorry. I was too lazy to listen to her crying, so I just walked out."
The shop owner smiled awkwardly, applied the hair oil and said, "Sir, take a look and see if you are satisfied."
Zheng Wenjie nodded, took out two silver dollars from his purse and handed them to the shop owner: "You can cut it like this with just a pair of scissors. Your craftsmanship is superb! No need to change."
"Goodbye, sir. If you like my craftsmanship, please come more often in the future. I won't charge you next time." The store manager smiled, collected the money, and sent Zheng Wenjie out of the store. He watched Zheng Wenjie walk towards the cloth shop diagonally opposite.
Zheng Wenjie cooperated with the store to measure his size and customized two suits, one black and one white. He agreed to pick them up in half a month. He put the remaining fourteen dollars into his new black long gown and jacket, put on cotton socks and cloth shoes, left the store, hailed a rickshaw to go to Northwest United University, and did not get off the rickshaw until the driver was exhausted. He bought two bags of pastries and hailed another rickshaw.
Northwest United University was established more than half a year ago. It has now been renamed Northwest University. It has gathered educational resources from the entire Northwest and has thousands of students studying on campus.
Zheng Wenjie got off the rickshaw carrying cakes and came to the university gate. There were only stone pillars and stone doors at the entrance of Northwest University, and there were no restrictions on people entering and exiting.
Zheng Wenjie was not in a hurry to find his cheap master immediately. It was a rare opportunity to visit a university in the Republic of China era.
Zheng Wenjie walked into Northwestern University along the winding road paved with bluestone slabs and rows of towering plane trees. There was a small garden in front of each teaching building, planted with different flowers and plants. Looking at the red brick walls and bluestone tiles, Zheng Wenjie had the illusion that his eyes had been opened.
As a modern person, Zheng Wenjie did not expect that the university environment during the Republic of China period would be so good. The students he met should still be in class at this time. They all seemed very hurried. The school will be relocated tomorrow, and classes are still going on. Zheng Wenjie can only sigh at the rigorous study life of today's college students.
He looked around and walked along the road until he saw a familiar figure. The bluestone road branched into a four-cornered pavilion. In the pavilion, Liu Yuanyi was holding a crying woman in a cotton jacket.
"Mr. Liu." Zheng Wenjie called out and walked into the pavilion.
The woman was obviously frightened and broke away from Liu Yuanyi's arms, wiping her tears.
Liu Yuanyi was not surprised to see Zheng Wenjie, and said with a smile: "Ajie, you came to see Gong Er? She should still be in class now."
Zheng Wenjie couldn't help but admire Liu Yuanyi. My master is teaching, and you are flirting here?
"Mr. Liu really has a lot of leisure time. Yesterday he was still concerned about my master's well-being, but today he is shamelessly flirting with others in public." Zheng Wenjie said sarcastically.
Hearing what Zheng Wenjie said, the woman glared at Zheng Wenjie: "I am with my husband, what does it have to do with you?"
Liu Yuanyi quickly hugged the woman and comforted her, "Ajie is Gong Er's apprentice."
The woman snorted coldly, "Ms. Gong Er is really amazing. She has such an uneducated disciple."
Liu Yuanyi looked at Zheng Wenjie and explained with a wry smile: "Ajie, this is my wife. We have been married for more than two years."
"You are not the one who is engaged to my master?" Zheng Wenjie was a little surprised. He didn't expect that it was a misunderstanding. Just as he was about to apologize, he was interrupted by the embarrassed Liu Yuanyi: "This is also me."
Zheng Wenjie was speechless. This was three wives and four concubines. He said unhappily, "Isn't monogamy a law in the Republic of China?"
"What does this have to do with you? If you want to find Gong Er, go find Gong Er. Don't come here and get in my way." As she said this, the woman started crying again.
Liu Yuanyi hurriedly whispered to comfort her: "I miss you so much, and I miss you so much. Yuting, don't be sad. I will visit you every ten days or half a month. You will graduate in another year."
Liu Yuanyi turned around and tried to chase Zheng Wenjie away: "Ajie, Gong Er is still in class. Just keep walking along this road. The teaching building with azaleas is the medical school. get out of class is almost over now. You go first."
With a feeling of both envy and contempt, Zheng Wenjie walked along the bluestone road to the teaching building planted with rhododendrons. Zheng Wenjie did not go up to find his cheap master, but sat alone on the stone bench in the small garden, waiting for her to finish class.
The winter sun shines through the gaps between the petals onto the buds, exuding a faint fragrance. The surroundings are quite quiet, with only the occasional teaching sounds coming from the teaching building behind him, making Zheng Wenjie feel peaceful.
Gong Ruomei remembered that Liu Yuanyi came to invite her this morning to see Wang Yuting off together. Since the Gong and Liu families had already exchanged engagement letters, although she was unhappy, she had no choice but to accept Liu Yuanyi's request.
After packing up my belongings, I didn't gather with the classmates around me to discuss the problems. I thanked the teacher and left the classroom.
Holding a book, she walked out of the stone archway of the teaching building, looking at the colorful rhododendrons as she walked. She glanced at the figure in a black gown who was admiring the flowers, then stepped onto the bluestone road and walked out of the school.
